The Lost of Entropy Estates form a cross-section of all facets of the population – humans left behind by the digital divide, cyborgs whose cybernetic enhancements are obsolete or broken, and androids whose programming has decayed and whose functions are impaired. They are the embodiment of the homeless in a world defined by technology but with no place for those who can’t keep up.
This group, marked by their visible helplessness and vulnerability, sometimes touches the hearts of the other residents of Entropy Estates. They occasionally receive handouts, be it spare parts, software updates, food or clothing – small acts of charity that reflect the compassion and humanity within the community. Nevertheless, they remain on the fringes of the social order, almost seen as untouchables to be shunned lest they themselves be infected by their fate.
The lost enjoy a paradoxical status: although they occupy the lowest rung of the social hierarchy, this very position protects them in a way. Their obvious weakness and lack of threat protect them from direct reprisals. No group within the Estates sees them as an enemy or a threat, and so they are usually left alone to continue their existence in the shadows.
Their presence serves as a constant reminder of the shortcomings and flaws of the society that surrounds them. They are the visible symptom of a deeper sickness – the discrepancy between the technological highs and the humane abyss that opens up in Entropy Estates. In the stillness of their presence lies a silent indictment of a world that has left them behind.
